Liposomal Glutathione: Does Oral Glutathione Raise Levels in the Body?

A single oral dose barely registered in 1992. Six months of daily glutathione raised stores 30% to 35%. The liposomal data are two small studies without a placebo arm.

Liposomal glutathione is sold on one promise: that wrapping glutathione in tiny fat bubbles gets it past the gut, so a capsule or liquid can do what an injection does. The question underneath is whether oral glutathione raises the body’s own levels at all. The human studies answer that with more nuance than either side of the argument usually allows.

Why oral glutathione was written off

Glutathione is a tripeptide, three amino acids joined together, and enzymes in the intestine and liver are built to cut peptides like it apart. A 1992 study gave 7 healthy volunteers a single oral dose of 0.15 mmol/kg, about 3 g, and measured blood levels for four and a half hours afterward [1].

Plasma glutathione did not rise significantly, and neither did its building blocks, cysteine and glutamate. The authors concluded that the systemic availability of a single oral dose is negligible, and that the enzyme gamma-glutamyltransferase in the gut and liver breaks most of it down [1]. That paper is the root of the idea that swallowing glutathione is pointless.

What happened with plain oral glutathione over weeks

Longer studies disagree with each other. A 2011 randomized, placebo-controlled trial gave 40 healthy adults 500 mg twice a day for 4 weeks [2]. It found no change in markers of oxidative stress, and no change in glutathione measured in red blood cells, either reduced, oxidized or as a ratio.

A 2015 trial ran longer and found the opposite [3]. It randomized 54 non-smoking adults to 250 mg or 1,000 mg a day, or placebo, for 6 months. At 6 months, glutathione rose 30% to 35% in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes on the higher dose, and 260% in cells from the inside of the cheek (P<0.05).

The rises built up over months and disappeared after a month off. One reading that fits both trials is that oral glutathione, or the amino acids it breaks into, raises stores slowly, too slowly for a 4-week trial or a single dose to catch. That is an interpretation, not something either trial tested directly.

What the liposomal studies measured

A liposome is a microscopic sphere with a fatty outer layer, the same kind of layer that makes up cell membranes. The proposed benefit is that the layer shields glutathione from digestive enzymes and helps it cross the gut wall intact. The studies below measured blood levels, not whether that mechanism is what raised them.

A 2018 pilot gave 12 healthy adults liposomal glutathione at 500 mg or 1,000 mg a day for one month [4]. Glutathione rose within a week, with maximum increases after 2 weeks of 40% in whole blood, 25% in red cells, 28% in plasma and 100% in immune cells (P<0.05). A marker of oxidative stress, plasma 8-isoprostane, fell 35%.

That study had no placebo group, and the authors note that its small size limited statistical power. The two doses did not differ from each other [4].

A 2026 study compared a branded liposomal product with plain glutathione head to head [5]. Twelve healthy people took a single 1 g dose, six per group, in an open-label design. Peak plasma glutathione on the liposomal form was about 6 times higher than on the plain form, and levels stayed above 500 ng/ml at 24 hours.

Liposomal versus injected glutathione

None of the studies above compared liposomal glutathione with an injection or an IV drip. Injected glutathione reaches the blood directly and needs no absorption step, but its own evidence for any clinical benefit is thin, and its safety record includes reactions traced to contaminated ingredient. What this means if you are considering it

The strongest statement the evidence supports is that oral glutathione, taken daily for months, raised glutathione stores in one randomized trial, and that a liposomal form raised blood levels in two small, uncontrolled or open-label studies. None showed a change in how people felt or in any disease outcome.
