Epitalon is marketed as a longevity peptide that switches on telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. The claim is specific, which makes it checkable. This page follows each part of it back to the study it rests on.

What epitalon is
Epitalon is a tetrapeptide, a chain of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine [6]. It was synthesized to match the amino acid makeup of epithalamin, an extract of cattle pineal glands.
Most of its research comes from one place. The FDA’s 2026 briefing document notes that most pharmacological studies of epitalon were conducted and published by a single research group in Russia [8].
The telomere studies
The founding telomere paper added epitalon to human fetal fibroblasts, cells that normally make no telomerase [1]. The cells began expressing the enzyme, and their telomeres lengthened.
A 2025 study from a British university repeated the question in cell lines [2]. In normal cells, epitalon lengthened telomeres in a dose-dependent way through telomerase. In breast cancer cell lines, telomeres also lengthened, through a different pathway called ALT.
Both results are in cells grown in a dish. No study has measured telomere length in people taking epitalon.
The human studies used a different substance
Two human reports on longer life sit in epitalon’s literature. Both tested epithalamin, the pineal extract, not the synthetic peptide.
One followed older people (n = 266) for 6 to 8 years, some given epithalamin, thymalin or both in the first 2 to 3 years [3]. It reported mortality 1.6- to 1.8-fold lower on epithalamin than in controls.
The other, described as a 12-year randomized study in older patients with coronary disease, reported 28% fewer deaths on epithalamine [4]. Its summary gives no group sizes.
The FDA’s review states plainly that it considers epitalon and epithalamin different substances [8]. A result for the extract is not a result for the peptide.

Where epitalon itself was given to people
The FDA’s literature search found three studies giving epitalon to humans [8]. Two gave it under the tongue to night-shift workers and measured circadian genes and a melatonin breakdown product. The third injected it near the eye in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
That eye study reported a positive clinical effect in 90% of cases, and its summary describes no control group [5]. Epitalon received an orphan drug designation for retinitis pigmentosa in 2010, which was revoked in 2016 [8].
It was nominated for compounding to treat insomnia. The FDA concluded there was a lack of evidence for that use, because no study measured sleep in patients with insomnia [8]. Peptides studied more directly for sleep are compared in peptides for sleep.
Regulatory status
Epitalon is on none of the FDA’s 503A category lists as of the May 14, 2026 update [11]. Its earlier nomination was withdrawn, and the FDA’s safety-risk page says it lacks the information to know whether it would harm people [9].
At the July 2026 meeting, the FDA’s own review concluded that no clinical data support epitalon’s safety in humans [8]. The advisory committee nonetheless voted to recommend adding it to the 503A list [10]. That vote is not binding, and the list has not changed.
It has also turned up outside legitimate supply. Belgian public health scientists identified epitalon in two illegal pharmaceutical preparations, in a report published in 2015 [7]. What “research use only” labels mean is covered in are peptides legal.
What this means
The telomere claim is a cell-culture finding, the lifespan claim borrows from a different substance, and the safety record in people is empty. None of that proves epitalon does nothing.
